Transforming Families: The Impact of Parenting Training in Bengkayang
Violence against children remains a problem in Bengkayang Regency. Poor parenting practices are one of the root causes of this violence. Therefore, Wahana Visi Indonesia, in collaboration with local religious leaders and the Family Welfare Movement (PKK), has conducted Parenting with Love (PDC) training for parents to increase their understanding and capacity for positive parenting. This is crucial for children to grow up in loving and safe families.
Dewi (29), a mother, also faced challenges in raising her children and family. "I used to be very harsh and selfish. Before attending the PDC, I would often get angry and say hurtful things. I rejected and could not accept any criticism or advice given to me. Initially, I refused to join PDC, but my friend kept insisting," said the woman who now also serves as a child protection volunteer in the village.
Dewi finally decided to attend the PDC training facilitated by WVI in her village. "When I attended this training, I was happy because I felt, I was not being judged for how I was raised and how I was raising my children now," she recalled.
Changes began to appear in Dewi after attending all the training sessions. "Not only me, but my family also felt the change. I've been able to manage my emotions and impulsive actions that I used to do when I was angry," she said. Before understanding positive parenting and making peace with herself, Dewi's family life was filled with arguments and misunderstandings. Now, Dewi and her husband can introspect and advise each other with love. "I'm happy with this change, our family lives with love and care for each other," she said.
Ibu Dewi is also committed to continuing to learn to be a better person. "Everything is not easy, but I believe in God's guidance. I believe we can all continue to share love within our families, and even with others," she said. She also hopes that the PDC training can reach more parents in the village so that the village where she lives can become a Child-Friendly Village.
