A Tale of Transformation: Literacy Blooms in the Highlands of Papua
In the heart of Jayawijaya District in Papua, a remarkable transformation is unfolding at one primary school. Gone are the days of bare classrooms and limited learning resources. Instead, a vibrant atmosphere of literacy and inspiration fills the air, thanks to the unwavering commitment of teachers, students, and community partners. Alpius, the school's headmaster shares, "Our classrooms have been transformed, rivaling those found in urban centers. This improved environment has ignited an enthusiasm for learning among our students."
The impact of this transformation extends far beyond the physical space. Akata, a third-grade teacher, have witnessed a remarkable shift in their students' engagement. "The 'Bedah Kelas' (class renovation) initiative has been instrumental in enhancing our teaching practices and fostering a love for learning among our students. We are deeply grateful to Wahana Visi Indonesia and Tokio Marine for their unwavering support," she remarks.
The students themselves are the true beneficiaries of this transformation. Nando, a student, said "I love reading books in my classroom now. My favorite one titled Angkasa,”. Besides Nando, Chiko, proudly demonstrates his growing literacy skills. "He c-a-n n-o-t, can not, g-o b-a-c-k, go back," he carefully spells out each word, his voice filled with determination. His current favorite is "Kraak...," a heartwarming tale of a fledgling bird's first journey into the world. And Jelda, a 10 years old girl said, “I am happy because there are lots of books in my classroom now. I just finished reading a book titled Jarik Adik,”.
The seeds of this transformation were sown when the school leadership embarked on a journey to enhance their students' literacy proficiency. Through teacher training and the creation of a rich literacy environment, classrooms were transformed into havens of learning and inspiration. Bu Evi, a dedicated teacher at the school, expresses her gratitude for the guidance and support received from fellow educators in Papua. Bu Septa and other teachers from neighboring schools have been invaluable mentors, sharing their insights and expertise in literacy pedagogy.
