Sincere Action and Loyalty in Volunteering with WVI
"Volunteering at WVI is fun, creative and impactful," says Ricky. During these last three years Ricky has been volunteering with WVI, he has never felt like he was sacrificing his time and energy. On the contrary, he gets great joy when he sees the children's smiles and the community's enthusiasm.
The phrase 'iseng-iseng berhadiah' fits the story of Ricky's introduction to WVI. Because he was studying International Relations, Ricky was looking for information about non-governmental humanitarian organizations in Indonesia. From there, Ricky learned about WVI and tried to join as a volunteer.
"Although now I often volunteer as an emcee at WVI events, initially I was volunteering as Education Officer for the WVI office in Sumba," said the young man who now works as a corporate employee. After experiencing how to work and have an impact on children and the community, Ricky did not hesitate to continue volunteering with WVI. "It feels like I want to continue to have new responsibilities, new challenges," he said.
The experience of volunteering as an emcee at the Water for Sumba Global 6K Fun Run event in May 2023 is one of Ricky's meaningful memories. He said, "At that event, seeing how the participants were willing, exhausted, to run 6KM to feel how every child in Southwest Sumba had to go back and forth to fetch water for the same distance was, in my opinion, extraordinary,".
Ricky concluded that, with WVI, each of us can be a solution with real action, and not just campaigns. In particular, when volunteering, each of us can have an impact and take part in building the lives of Indonesian children. "So that all children have a better chance," Ricky hopes.
As a young generation, Ricky also feels that young people have great power to advocate changes. He invites every young Indonesian to take a role, register as a volunteer, and experience the joy of being part of the change. So that the great power possessed by Indonesian young people can indeed improve the lives of the next generations.
